NOTICE OF SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING

MONDAY 22ND MAY 8.30PM in the clubhouse.

The Committee of Management has agreed to develop a renewable energy project which will be presented to the meeting.

The details of the proposed project will be presented and discussed at the meeting along with an opportunity to ask questions.

Membership Renewal 2017

We have again held our subscription fees to the same level, with no increase. The fabulous value offered by being a member at Woodend is highlighted further by the comparison of tennis section subscriptions for senior Members from other clubs in the West of Scotland who have similar facilities and who provide similar services.

Whitecraigs    £410
Strathgryffe    £400
Newlands       £400
Giffnock          £370
Western          £310
Hillhead          £230
Titwood           £220
Broomhill        £220
Woodend        £170

As you can see we are over 22% cheaper than any of the other listed clubs. This represents great value and is a feature of the club that we are rightly proud of.

Mini Leagues & Tot’s Tennis

A big thank you to parents, coaches, members and children alike for their patience during the upgrading of our floodlight columns. So far we have managed to keep all group classes running despite being one court down for a couple of weeks.

TOTS tennis returns this week. Class time 1.30-2.15pm. For more info please email me on chrischapman11@hotmail.com.

After the October holiday I plan running mini leagues for our Junior and Intermediate players. Leagues will be short format and wont be contain too many players. All players will be encouraged to play at least once a week during the Autumn/Winter months. Matches will be arranged by the players themselves.

If you are interested in your son or daughter taking part please email me before October 16th. Leagues will be for:

GREEN BALL
U12 BOYS
U14 BOYS
U18 BOYS
U18 GIRLS
U14 GIRLS

A red and orange event mini league afternoon will take place later in the year. More details to follow.

Floodlights Week 1 update

Court work is progressing well. Courts 3,4 & 5 are now playable, albeit without floodlights. Courts 1 & 2 are now non playable as the new column bases are fitted ready for installation of the final three new columns.

Court electrics works should commence next week, a further update to follow this weekend.

We again request that you access the club from the West entrance and keep away form the work ongoing on Courts 1 & 2.

Floodlighting Redevelopment Work Status update

Floodlighting Redevelopment Work Status update

Background

At the end of March this year during the unusually high gales Woodend experienced an incident where one of our floodlighting columns blew over. Luckily there was no one hurt or injured and the only damage that resulted from this incident was a slightly dented run off area on the tennis courts.

Subsequent to this unfortunate incident with expert advise the club has decided to carry out an upgrade to the floodlighting system which will involve removal of columns that were originally installed in the late 1970s (14 columns in total being removed) and the installation of 9 new columns. The number of floodlight columns will be reduced by removing the central court columns. All new cabling and floodlight units will be installed and as technology has advanced , even in the 7 or so years since we last replaced the floodlight units, we will achieve the necessary court illumination using just four lamps per court. In addition the spill-over of light from the new floodlights onto the surrounding non playing areas (gardens, pathways, lanes etc) will be greatly reduced, which we hope will benefit everyone in the surrounding areas.

The work for removal of existing columns and replacement with new columns and lights will start on Monday 31st August 2015 and will involve extensive civil engineering plant and groundworks. Works are expected to take approximately 4-5 weeks to complete. The Contractors working will, if all goes according to schedule, be limited to 5 days a week and we will advise if there is any change to this.

There will be unavoidably severe disruption to all our tennis, for which there is no alternative. Inevitably there will also be some noise and disruption but as we hope you will agree, it is a necessary requirement from a Health and Safety perspective and we believe the end result will be an improved floodlighting system with reduced light pollution.

Outline programme of works

-No floodlighting will be available and Courts 3,4 & 5 will be off limits from Monday 31st August 2015.

-Only Courts 1 & 2 will be available from Monday 31st August 2015 for a period of 2 weeks or so. Thereafter, Courts 3,4 & 5 will be available and Courts 1 & 2 will be off limits.

-Work is planned to be completed before the beginning of October 2015.

Court Priority

With initially only two courts being playable (Courts 1& 2 from this Monday), Chris Chapman’s Club Tennis coaching sessions will have priority. Please consult the Website Calendar WWW.WoodendBLTC.CO.UK for full details and timings of coaching. Please note that Club Championship matches do not have priority over other matches.

For further information keep checking this website.

Safety

Safety of everyone using the Woodend facilities is paramount. We request that Parents and Guardians supervise Junior members when on the grounds and request that all members are aware of the requirement to keep away from redevelopment works, plant and equipment.

Court Booking

The court booking system will be in place and used, with a limit of 1 hour on all matches, if players are waiting to play.

For your information and reference: Sunset times are as follows:

31st August          20:15 hrs so play after 7.45-8pm will be problematic

7th September    19:57 hrs so play after 7.30-7.45pm will be problematic

14th September   19:38 hrs so play after 7.10-7.30pm will be problematic

21st September 19:20 hrs so play after 7pm will be problematic

28th September 19:01 hrs so play after 6.45pm will be problematic

We urge Members if at all possible to play their games during the day.

Adults will have priority over Juniors and Intermediates from 6pm each weekday night. We urge players playing late afternoon/early evening to play doubles tennis where possible. Also please play at the weekends during the day, again if possible.

Bar Times

Throughout the floodlighting redevelopment normal bar times will be maintained. Why not come along and see the floodlighting progress for yourselves and use the bar facilities?

In advance of the works starting we thank you for your patience in this matter and please, if you have any further questions, comments or suggestions as to how we can better execute this vital piece of work, please do not hesitate to contact either Miles Baigent (Miles.Baigent@Sky.Com) or another member of the Tennis Committee.

Regards

(Woodend Tennis Committee)

Ladies Doubles Box Leagues Starting Soon!

In September, the club will start monthly box leagues for ladies. Any female club member can enter, you will be put into groups of 6 or 8 players of a similar ability and then paired up. During the month you will play the other pairs in your league; either 2 or 3 matches which you organise yourselves. We will aim to mix up the groups and the pairings each month to encourage a broader network of social and competitive play.

The format will be 2 sets followed by a championship tie break, if necessary. Details and communications will be posted on the tennis notice board in the club.

If you are interested in entering for September, then please add your name, number and email address onto the list in the clubhouse by Monday 25th August.

Any questions, then please contact charlotte-petrie@hotmail.co.uk or carol.nelson1956@ntlworld.com
